EVENT REPORT:
The Department of Chemistry, PDM University organized an invited talk on 6th February, 2016 by Dr. S. K. Dhawan, Chief Scientist, National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi, on “Designing of polymers for societal applications”.
Dr. Dhawan talked about the applications of conducting polymers for designing technologies such as smart & corrosion resistant coatings, weight reduction in lead acid batteries, and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding. He also explained as to how the effect of electromagnetic radiation can be minimized by using conducting polymer shields. Dr Dhawan also explained how the waste plastic bags, which are non-biodegradable and take at least one thousand years to completely degrade, could be recycled and converted into tiles. The talk essentially focused on societal applications of polymers for societal usage.
Prof A K Bakhshi , Vice-Chancellor , PDM University presided over the function. Prof Bakhshi said that we are living in the age of polymers. There is hardly any sphere of human activity which has remained untouched by these polymers. He said that polymers which have always been considered as insulators of electricity could now be made electrically conducting by simple modification. This has opened a new set of applications for society.
Prof. Paramjit Singh, Dean Academic Affairs, PDM University was also present on the occasion.
